Today’s Supreme Court ruling that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional by a 5-4 vote grants same-sex couples the same legal rights and benefits as our heterosexual counterparts on a federal level. This not only marks a pivotal point in our nation’s history, but will also make it exponentially more challenging for me to find a husband as all the good ones will start pairing up and getting engaged. Social media exploded with glee over the news this morning, and I am still misty-eyed and ready to agree to the next proposal I receive.
Two years ago New York City passed the marriage equality bill the day before pride weekend, inciting both tears of joy and thousands of champagne bottles opening. The fall of DOMA prompted many to leave work early and take to the streets to celebrate. Before joining them for an early happy hour, I lent my voice to the chorus online:
This ruling comes days before New York City Pride and as we get ready to celebrate let us not forget those who came before us to lay down the foundation for this day. We have so much work ahead of us, but this is a time to celebrate! Where is Michele Bachman? Drinks are on her tonight!
